Fried Bread to Serve with Soup

Ingredients
- stale bread loaf
- 2 ounces butter
Instructions
- Cut slices a quarter of an inch thick from a stale loaf.
- Pare off the crust from each slice.
- Divide the bread into dice or cut it with a small paste-cutter into any other form.
- Melt the butter in a frying-pan over a gentle fire.
- Add the bread to the melted butter.
- Keep the bread turned over the fire until it is equally coloured to a very pale brown.
- Drain the bread from the butter.
- Dry it on a soft cloth, or on a sheet of paper placed before a clear fire upon a dish, or upon a reversed sieve.
- Serve hot.
