Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Cut a loaf of bread as thin as possible. Layer the bread slices in the bottom of a deep dish, alternating with slices of marrow or butter and a handful of currants or stoned raisins. Continue layering until the dish is full, ensuring the currants or raisins are at the top.
  2. Beat four eggs and mix them with a quart of milk that has been boiled and cooled, a quarter pound of sugar, and grated nutmeg. Pour this custard mixture over the bread and fruit.
  3. Bake in a moderate oven until set. Serve with wine sauce.
