A Common Cake

Ingredients
- 1 pound flour
- 6 ounces butter
- 2 teaspoons yeast
- 5 whole eggs
- 0.5 pound sugar
- 0.25 pint milk
- currants or carraways
- candied citron and lemon-peel
Instructions
- Rub together the flour and butter until the mixture resembles paste, then mix in the yeast. Set the mixture aside to rise.
- Once risen, mix in the eggs, sugar, and milk. Beat well together.
- Add currants or carraways (or both) to taste. If you prefer a richer cake, use more butter and eggs, and incorporate candied citron and lemon-peel. Beat all ingredients together thoroughly.
